Our Australian history
The Australian operation of Gallagher began trading in 1985 and is wholly owned by Arthur J. Gallagher & Co., a family-owned US brokerage that was founded in October 1927. Gallagher employs more than 2,500 staff in 60+ locations across Australia and New Zealand.
The group is divided into four operating entities:
- Gallagher – providing insurance broking and risk management services.
- Crombie Lockwood (New Zealand) – providing insurance broking and risk management services.
- Gallagher Bassett – a multi-line third party claims administrator. Specialising in the detailed implementation and management of claims and compensation programs.
- Pen Underwriting Agencies – a multi-line general insurance agency.
In 2014, Gallagher purchased the insurance broking arm of Wesfarmers Limited, which included OAMPS Insurance Brokers (Australia) and Crombie Lockwood (New Zealand).
OAMPS' history began in 1976 as the Oil Agents Mutual Provident Society (OAMPS) with the aim of sourcing a better insurance deal for members of the fuel transport industry. In 1989 OAMPS was listed on the Australian Stock Exchange, by which time it had become a mainstream insurance broker and one of Australia’s Top 200 listed companies. In 2006, OAMPS became part of the Wesfarmers Group, prior to its acquisition by Arthur J. Gallagher & Co.
Since inception, Gallagher’s mission has been to build strong relationships with our clients and business partners, while treating each other with respect and providing solid opportunities for professional growth.
